EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
